“Jesus was born in Bethlehem near Jerusalem during the reign of King Herod. After Jesus’ birth a group of spiritual priests from the East came to Jerusalem and inquired of the people, ‘Where is the child who is born king of the Jewish people? We observed his star rising in the sky and we’ve come to bow before him in worship.’ When they saw the star, they were so ecstatic that they shouted and celebrated with unrestrained joy. When they came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, they were overcome. Falling to the ground at his feet they worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure boxes full of gifts and presented him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:1-2, 10-11 TPT
It’s the time of year when we are struggling to try and decide what gifts to buy, for whom, and how much to spend, or what about their needs, and on it goes. So unlike gifting should be. Unfortunately, with so much going on during this time, we can easily lose the joy that should be felt within our giving.
In this passage we find a group of individuals whose main goal was to bring gifts, not just anything, but their most expensive, their very best, in their worship to Jesus. Gold was a gift for royalty, incense, a gift for deity, and myrrh, a spice for a person who was going to die, nothing spared. Even more important, was their gift of self, as thy bowed down in worship to their Savior. This was gifting and worship at it’s best, honoring Jesus for who he is, by giving of oneself.
Heavenly Father, help us to remember, that nothing we can ever give, will match your gift to us, in the giving of your Son, to be born, to give his life, in order that we might live, and it’s ours all for the asking.
In Christ Love
