We’ve all been a caregiver at one time or another, so we can understand the toll it can take on those who are caregivers. I recently had the opportunity to accompany my daughter to one of her chemotherapy treatments and as I gazed around the room I couldn’t help but notice the number of patients who had someone with them, which is necessary in some, if not most cases, although some were able to take care of themselves. I wondered how often those who are the total caregiver have the opportunity to care for themselves and how often they are asked if they needed help. Many caregivers don’t, or won’t, reach out for help not wanting to burden anyone else, and there are hardships for those who don’t ask for help such as emotional exhaustion, burnout, feeling isolated {which is when the caregiver needs to reach out if for nothing more than to have someone to talk to!). The list of issues could go on and on. Self-care is vital when we are caring for someone, and that is prioritizing our spiritual, emotional and physical health through exercise, diet, rest and accepting help from others, and that is essential so we can avoid burnout. As Christian caregivers we must trust in God’s strength and presence which will bring a sense of peace and a safe place to rest. I pray that all caregivers feel that
presence.
Matthew 11:28
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank you for all caregivers, no matter how big or small the task may be for them. May our love and prayers for them help bring patience, comfort and peace to them when they are feeling overwhelmed, and may they be encouraged to reach out to others when needed. In your precious name we pray. Amen
