“As Jesus and the disciples continued on their journey, they came to a village where a woman welcomed Jesus into her home. Her name was Martha and she had a sister named Mary. Mary sat down attentively before the Master, absorbing every revelation he shared. But Martha became exasperated by finishing the numerous household chores in preparation for her guest, so the interrupted Jesus and said, ‘Lord, don’t you think it’s unfair that my sister left me to do all the work by myself? You should tell her to get up and help me.’ The Lord answered her, ‘Martha, my beloved Martha. Why are you upset and troubled, pulled away by all these many distractions? Mary has discovered the one thing most important by choosing to sit at my feet. She is undistracted, and I won’t take this privilege from her.'” Luke 10:38-42 TPT
How do we serve Jesus? Do we find ourselves so busy within our surroundings that we forget to take the time to serve Him? In the midst of our daily task, whether at work, home, or wherever, we can easily get caught up in attempting perfection. Our goal, so many times, is for all to see that everything looks great, for those observing.
In this passage, both Mary and Martha were attempting to serve Jesus. Martha, like so many of us, wanted everything to be just right within the house and with the meal she was preparing. Mary just wanted to sit at his feet and take in all he had to say. Both sisters were serving Jesus in their own way, but since Martha felt that she was working harder, she complained. Jesus explained to her, that nothing should take the place of a vital and personal relationship with him, which can be ours for the asking.
Heavenly Father, help us to remember the importance of spending time at the feet of our Savior, quietly listening, and be ever so thankful.
In Christ Love
