“My heart, 0 God, is quiet and confident. Now I can sing with passion your wonderful praises! Awake, 0 my soul, with the music of his splendor-song! Arise, my soul, and sing his praises! My worship will awaken the dawn, greeting the daybreak with my songs of praise! Wherever I go I will thank you, my God. Among all the nations they will hear my praise songs to you. Your love is so extravagant it reaches to the heavens. Your faithfulness so astonishing it stretches to the sky! Lord God, be exalted as you soar throughout the heavens. God’s faithfulness, His loyalty, His devotion, and especially His extravagant love for us should help to keep us focused. But, so many times, especially when we are in the middles of a stressful circumstance, we tend to forget all that he has available for us before we find ourselves caught in the middle of feeling anxious, where worry can begin to take over.
In this passage, David is writing this Psalm at a time when he could have been under total stress, since he was hiding in a cave from Saul. Instead, we are blessed with these words of wisdom as guidance. David’s faith in God provided him with the peace necessary to overcome the anxiety that was going on around him. Rather, he found his best defense was to be within the stillness of knowing and being in God’s presence. His example shows us how to turn anxious times into blessings filled with praising God, due to his love and faithfulness for us, knowing this same can be ours, simply for the asking.
Heavenly Father, help us to realize that, like David, your love and faithfulness can easily overcome the outside, by seeking His presence for our inner peace, and be ever so thankful.
